10 Writing Tips From David Ogilvy

David Ogilvy is one of the most quoted advertising professionals and a legend in the space. So it was neat to see Lists of Note pull up an internal memo sent to all employees of his advertising agency in 1982.
As we’re clearly fans of writing tips we thought we’d share David’s memo with you for some Friday inspiration:
The better you write, the higher you go in Ogilvy & Mather. People who think well, write well.
Woolly minded people write woolly memos, woolly letters and woolly speeches.
Good writing is not a natural gift. You have to learn to write well. Here are 10 hints:
1. Read the Roman-Raphaelson book on writing*. Read it three times.
2. Write the way you talk. Naturally.
3. Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs.
4. Never use jargon words like reconceptualize, demassification, attitudinally, judgmentally. They are hallmarks of a pretentious ass.
5. Never write more than two pages on any subject.
6. Check your quotations.
7. Never send a letter or a memo on the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning—and then edit it.
8. If it is something important, get a colleague to improve it.
9. Before you send your letter or your memo, make sure it is crystal clear what you want the recipient to do.
10. If you want ACTION, don’t write. Go and tell the guy what you want.

And for your moment of zen, in case you haven’t seen it, this video from David on the importance of direct marketing is unmissable:

Interesting to hear him compare and contrast direct response and general advertising. Man, that conversation seems awfully familiar!

Great post Adam! In addition, we all go through writer’s block. Check out my blog on the Flack Me site http://www.talentzoo.com/flack-me/blog_news.php?articleID=13120

It is amazing that these 10 tips from 1982 still hold true today.
I particularly like:
Write the way you talk
Keep it short
Read it out loud
These are three of the top tips you will ever get.

As an aspiring writer myself, it is refreshing to know that I have been implementing these simple rules to my pieces. If only there was a simple way to solve writer’s block.

I think that number 3 and number 5 relate especially well to blog post writing today. People go to blogs to get short bits of information. They don’t want to spend an hour reading a blog post.

All of the PR professionals I have talked to have told me the same thing; writing is the most important part of the job. As I am a PR student, I have been looking for tips and advice on writing. It’s always nice to see that the great minds of yesterday have figured out certain tidbits of timeless knowledge. My favorite tip is #4. People who use big words are usually the ones who are trying to make up for the lack of being able to think clearly, and for themselves; or they may just have what I like to call “small man (or woman) syndrome. I’ve always said that if someone can explain electricity to an adult, big deal. But if someone can effectively explain it to a 5 year old, they are a true genius. I also enjoyed the fact that the tips are short and to the point. Effective writing is just that.

I am not in PR, but was led to this site while looking for information on blog posting. I find Mr. Ogilvy’s tips important for anyone, whether you are writing for yourself or a business. Thanks!

These are great tips! As a marketing professional, writing is just one ingredient in the “marketing soup” that create a perfect marketing recipe.
If you can write eloquently while following these tips, you can really have an edge above the rest.
