50 Viral Images The Web Shared In 2010
As a perpetual observer/analyzer of what people share and why, it’s fascinating to me to study content that spreads. As such, I document/bookmark much of the web’s hottest content for my own insight/analysis, but I also share with readers here too.
Images have always been one of the most popular types of content on the web, (even through the popularization of video) and I’m always surprised more marketing and PR folk don’t actively use them as part of their content mixes.
Anyway – to continue to spread inspiration, following are 50 images the web has shared in 2010 (likely not all created in 2010, but were shared this year).
This is the 4th installment of this series, if you’re new to the blog check out the first three – as when taken together you’ll start to notice patterns in the web’s most shared images
- 50 Viral Images (and how they spread)
- 50 Viral Images Part 2
- 50 Viral Images The Web Shared In 2009 (part 3)
If you’re involved in any facet of content marketing, study the archetypes of popular images to gain an understanding of why certain images are sticky and others fall flat.
Captions added to provide context.

Wow …making viral content more viral, this is a really killer formula ! Awesome work guys, but I think that the title should be “50 Viral Images The Web Share in the first 6 months of 2010″

Fair enough – well I’m sure SU, Digg, Reddit and other communities will keep sharing images for the second half of the year. I’ll keep documenting :)

Great list, thanks for sharing.
In response to your question “Red light status bar – why has this not been invented yet?”
It actually has and is in daily use in Japan. It originated in the City of Osaka, whose inhabitants are famous for being in a hurry and being excellent business people (Time is money).
The most common ones tell you how many more seconds you have to wait.
See a sample on the middle of this Japanese page:

I couldn’t find an online image right away of a traffic light with bars, but they’re cool.

Kjeld: The image you referenced is not of an uncommon thing, I live in Canada and I see pedestrian lights with timers everywhere. I’m pretty sure the image on the list only exists in concept form. However, I very well may be wrong.
Great List

The picture in the blog you linked to actually looks more like a crosswalk countdown than a red light countdown. Those are popular in the US as well.

The status bars on trafic lights have been in use for some time in The Netherlands as well. You see them often around The Hague, usually on bicycle-lanes.
Not that they’re very accurate, but it’s nice to have something next to the light that builds up the anticipation ^^

http://www.city-data.com/picfiles/pic1095.php shows what is purported to be the world’s first traffic light from Ashville, Ohio You can see it has a visible sweep hand that tells you when the light will change, so this is not exactly a new idea.
More information at http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2927 The story I heard was that Ashville, Ohio had to repair the light, and the federal bureaucrats wouldn’t let them hang it back up because it didn’t comply with the new traffic light standards.

Awesome collection!
One thing to point out: I think the Star Wars motorcycle is actually the Bat-Pod from The Dark Knight – http://bit.ly/ctWDmn

Thank you. I was hoping I was not the only one to notice it.

One other thing to point out. Your ‘Wall of Knowledge’ is actually one of the three book shelves filled with books of the 6 million Jews and 5 million other people who died during the Holocaust. The wall is located at Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial and Anti-Genocide Museum in Israel. I’ve seen it myself.
AtomManhattan replied | Aug 17, 2010 (1 comment)
It’s a concept piece from Stockholm, according to the only info on it I’ve ever read. But I guess if you’ve been there, you could be right. People never lie on the internet. However, if you’re right, I like it a hell of a lot less.
Alex replied | Aug 30, 2010 (1 comment)
I was thinking that too, but i remember the yad vashem bookshelves being in a circular well with the viewer in the middle, not being horizontal. but i could be wrong- i went to yad vashem a couple of years ago and was too harrowed by it to remember much.
Irit replied | Oct 4, 2010 (1 comment)
Actually, Yad Vashem has absolutely nothing to do with it.
This photo is a CGI image of the future Stockholm library:

Nice collection, especially the double photo shoot is awesome.
Tiny detail: That “Star Wars” sky light thing (below the “Star Wars” motorcycle) might actually very well be a reference to the “Tron” logo instead. See here: http://thisdistractedglobe.com/2008/04/06/tron-1982/
