This is a topic of frequent conversation around here. We cover it a bit in one of our podcasts at http://succesu.com but we have come to defining it as the Minimum Viable Product which helps to define the early mover advantage. Who ever is first in is the initial definer of the MVP, so that each subsequent entry has a standard they must first meet to be acceptable.

I've thought about this as well, although never named it. The prestandard phase is kind of like the Wild West. Possibilities abound and you can become an arbitrageur (learn a bunch of different protocols and offer the service of bridging them) but on the global scale it is inefficient, which is why it coalesces into a standard that everyone uses. Would love to see you develop this topic further :)
PS. I am interested in writing a guest post.

Adam this is an 'insane' way of looking at standards in Social Media, I definitely think this will still hold water in years to come, especially with the new age entrepreneur and building businesses. I think there is much to play for within Business Networking/Project Management .

I love your insights, Adam. Great read. What are your thoughts on maintaining dominance throughout the prestandard phase?
Look at MySpace. They were poised to be the social networking sweethearts until Facebook took over a few years ago. MySpace had dominance in the prestandard phase but lost it. The birth and destruction cycles you speak of are indeed volatile and accelerated. What an exciting time for the web, huh?
