I often scratch my head trying to figure out why executives don't "get it". Then I think back to The Drunkard's Walk by Leonard Mlodinow. Essentially Mlodinow says that *someone* has to get the executive role. That someone gets there mostly on chance; rarely based on intelligence and merit. Since there are so few executive spots, it leaves the many smart and experienced folks scratching their heads when those executives mandate ill-informed hunches and ideas. My experience has taught me that everyone has an opinion about marketing, but not everyone is IN marketing. There's no right way in marketing, but there is a difference between a right way and a wrong way. Too many executives go the wrong way.

Excellent submission ! Too many executives think that all there is to a digital strategy is sitting in front of a computer and typing in some code and content. Even when they spend the time to get it right they often fail to adequately measure and optimize the results via their web analytics. Simple things like testing & validation and usability contribute a great user experience which is essential if you want people to have a good impression of your brand experience via online marketing.

Hi Adam, great post! I really think that point 11 can become a key differentiator towards success. It's never been so easy to form alliances and relationships. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Niall

First class post Adam, I am just preparing a strategy and this served as a fantastic reminder of the obstacles I have to 'attempt' to clear before any kind of success.
Thanks
