This is a great discussion. I think that many people like actors, music artists, comedians and others, do not always set out to be leaders. They simply are following their passion. Subsequently, when they become successful, by default, they become a guiding light and others began to look to them as a source of inspiration and hope for themselves.

I think if you're going to be an authority blogger of some sort, then yes, you do need to have some sort of leadership qualities, or you have to develop them. I mean it's scary taking a position and writing about things as if you know what you're talking about, and saying them with confidence at that. I've been blogging on my current blog now for about 7 months and Ive been providing some very definite opinions about marketing (in Spanish). I've had some people disagree with me in my comments section, but I don't let that dissuade me, and I think that's something leaders do, make a point without fear of disagreement.

Good question and one I've been thinking about since you tweeted the link to The Farm Lane post...I believe leadership or some ahead of the curve, ahead of the crowd confidence and quality is required for consistent blogging success -- however you measure that success. I think that on line leadership might attract people with different qualities than those required for in person, charm a room leadership. When someone combines the qualities required for both on and off line leadership, you get that perfect mix of analysis, charisma and communication that makes a superstar.

Thank you so much for featuring my blog - I love your analysis of it!

I think that Deb has come up with a great point - I think I prefer bloggers to be teachers too.

Hi,
This is a great topic. I think blogging has opened up the doors to people who may be uncomfortable speaking in social situations. I can relate to this although I am constantly working on that aspect of my personality. I've always enjoyed writing so much more than speaking and I think blogging has given the "non-leader" type the ability to lead through their words. It certainly is a great medium to do so. This is a very thought-provoking topic...

Best,
Bob
