Personally, I prefer the more organic approach. Online conversations that lead to face-to-face meetings are probably the most effective way to reach influencers.

Great piece. I believe in the things you mentioned in this post.
Also, is a 'influencer' the same or similar to a 'connector' as described in Malcolm Gladwell's "Tipping Point"? Or is it different?
I kind of interpreted it as something similar.
Anyway, as always great material. This is another post I document so I can go back to it when I am in that actual situation.

I suspect that you are ahead of the curve once again when it comes to recognition of what to us is so obvious. It makes sense to me that when someone is a great fan of your products, services or blog and they continually promote on your behalf that you would reach out to them.
There is only so much time and we can each uplift only a limited number of others. If you don't eventually get around to thanking your influencers they will move on to other interests. If you cross their path regularly and stay on their radar you keep them involved. Support their efforts to have them keep supporting yours!

I prefer reaching organically. I once tried a pitch and failed miserably. So, I learned from the mistake and tried to reach organically. I wrote a good article and asked a big blogger in my niche for a guest post. he liked the idea and now, we are friends!
