I was recently brought in as a marketing intern at a digital consultancy in Ann Arbor. Although 99% of our work is programming, PR plays a huge role in the success of our company these days. Blogs must be thought of not necessarily as Advertising, but as a fishing line bringing people to your thoughts.

Solid post. Very thorough. It is sad, but with the way the Internet is constructed (and exploited) It's virtually impossible for an average user to get to the best thing they are looking for, they'll get the best advertised instead. And it's very rare when these 2 are the same thing...
Plus from what I've seen so far, those that complain about people creating marketing oriented blogs/content, are usually either hypocrites doing the same or bitter failures.

You summed it up the way I would have. I don't think buzz can be manufactured by one individual and with out sufficient resources though? You mention 'getting on the first page of Digg' in an off hand manner as though this is something relatively easy to do? Many PR companies have to pay people to Digg submissions to get to page one so how a lonesome blogger could ever do this I just don't know!
I'm a firm believer that it's your offline activity and influence that affects your online standing.Thats why the biggest Twitter 'stars' are from the TV and film industry. This filters down to well respected industry execs.

Really enjoyed reading this article Adam.

I don’t think buzz can be manufactured by one individual and with out sufficient resources though?
