A few above have mentioned that creative ideas come along in the middle of the night and whilst watching a movie. This is because beta is off - beta being the analytical brainwaves we need for logical thinking. That's the first step. Then we need some theta waves - the infinite possibility reservoir. Once we're got those switched on (by mentally going down into or under or through something), we need to activate alpha waves. Alpha is the bridge - it pumps up the creative material from sub-conscious to consciousness. If we didn't have alpha, we wouldn't remember our dreams or a meditation session.

interesting theory - don't think that infinite reserves are limited to "creative people" - maybe just that they access those reserves better. or stop inhibiting that access perhaps.
i think creative people just get out of their own way and let it flow. maybe why creatives are often seen as hokey or not as intellegent - because they're not over-thinking things. which i think is actually a good thing.
...that's why i think your mental RAM analogy is awesome - because your computer works best when there's little background processing like judgements, worries, thoughts etc. creatives just quiet the mind and let it flow.
let it flow.

Good common sense ideas here, Adam. With regards to older works, I find that I'm pleasantly surprised by some (not most, though) of my older stuff and it does get the wheels turning a bit.

Something that helps is to commit to doing things outside our comfort zone, on a regular basis. If you don't like to speak in public, volunteer to do a presentation; if you find yourself eating the same things all the time, go to a restaurant you would otherwise not go; if you find yourself too comfortable, volunteer to a cause where you can help other people; if you rather stay in bed, muster your courage and go for that early morning walk.
I would be a hypocrite if I said that I'm already doing all those things, but I'm starting to do them, and they definitely expand your creativity and motivation.

Keep life interesting and you always have something to talk about. And if that fails, I take a break. It may be the hardest thing to do at the time, but it can really make a difference.
I hit a wall last week. I had topic ideas and just couldn't get them to blog. I tried everything, even writing and re-writing. I just stopped. For almost a week - I was terrified to do it. But, it worked and I was back at it today.
Don't know that I'm self-actualize, but I at least try to be. Continually work on the fourth bullet. It's hard to form and share opinions and not become prejudiced!
