Clinging to the past was certainly the strategy for many newspapers, and the industry as a whole for way too long. The price has been high, and believe it or not, there is still some denial, reluctance and refusal to come to grips with the fact that the 100-year monopoly is dead in the water.

What's truly astounding is the level of denial in the face of absolute and irrefutable evidence that the old model is hosed. Out of curiosity, I attended a panel of music industry executives several months ago: all but one seemed to feel that "people shouldn't steal music" was a legitimate business strategy. For real. The ship is GOING DOWN and they're trying to charge people for deck chairs.
I think the big guys are a lost cause. I've been a part of too many institutions to believe otherwise. Your central point (well argued by examples to the contrary) is that in chaos lies opportunity.
Go get 'em.

I am totally with you! I think it all has to do with control, and how the media (of which I am a member) is having a lot of trouble letting go!! I blogged about it here http://y-rd.blogspot.com/2009/01/news-business-ultimate-control-freak.html
I like how you tie together all the different kinds of media. It's interesting how all of their problems will go down in history as the same failure to move in unison with the user-controlled world of the 21st century.

Couldn't agree with you more. I don't understand why these companies continue to rally against innovation and adaptation.
As you eloquently list out, the media companies continue to dig themselves into a deeper hole. And in the process, they're loosing crowds of fans.
