Good post, Adam. Appreciate your thoughts and hope some collegues take advantage of your insight!
It's in everyones own hands to manage their own online reputation. Not saying anything is saying nothing. Hardly an option.
Personally, I participate in the conversation via my own blog, LinkedIn, FaceBook and Twitter. Each have their own place. But they are all in constant flux...
Ultimately, as marketers we all need to market ourselves. Thanks for the reminder and encouragement.

@Craig - you're right, it doesn't have to be on marketing. Just showing you understand the medium enough to build a following shows you understand marketing. In reality, popular bloggers are also great marketers, even if they don't realize it.

The great thing about online tools now is that I think you can do both. You can market your company or service, and as well yourself. Because in the end the two go hand in hand. That's what the internet does, and if you can also market yourself and develop networks and credibility and trust, you will be able to market your company better.
I agree I think all involved should be blogging, if nothing else as an asset to gain experience from. One of the reasons I just started my own blog. But do you think it has to be industry related? I just started a completely different type of blog, but still feel it could potentially have the same benefits down the road in terms of a resume or getting my own brand out there and to help market myself. what do you think?

Good point about personal branding. It is important to have a plan that incorporates marketing using different forms of social media and follow-through. As you stated, you have to stand out, and simply posting blogs or articles and not making yourself available to interact with the viewers will not form necessary relationships.
