It's like the "Would you jump off a cliff if your friends did?" scenario.
As you say, Adam, the choice is yours/ours. Someone recommend a blog or Twitter user for you to check out. Do so - but if it's not for you, there's no divining law that says you have to stay with it regardless.
We're not quite at Orwell's 1984 yet - make your own choices.

Agree completely about the need to control your own information flow. It's hard, but it's worth it.
Maybe the real issue isn't so much not the number of blogs out there but the pressure of competition. When I first started blogging, I felt this pressure to keep up with just about any and every social media and marketing and PR blogs I could find, and to make sure I kept up with the "must reads."
But there's just too much out there ... and frankly, reading too many opinions has the potential to squelch your own.
I still spend way too much time trying to decide whether what I have to say is "unique enough" -- even though I know it's only a distraction. I'm most productive when I focus more on following who I want to follow, linking what I want to link, saying what I want to say, and improving how I say it.

Hi Adam:
As you say, it's really up to us to control the flow of info coming our way. It's like keeping our room clean and organized. It starts by having a place for everything and routinely getting rid of what we don't need. In my case I have set a few rules: I read a lot of blogs but don't subscribe to all of them. The ones that I always read and consider indispensable are those listed in my blogroll page. Regarding social networks, I use mainly three: LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. In Facebook, I only friend people that I know very well (it's my most restricted circle). In LinkedIn I try to add only people who somehow relate to my areas of expertise and with whom I have at least exchanged blog comments or a few emails. With Twitter I am a bit more open, since I use it not only for professional topics but also for secondary areas of interest, and also because Twitter doesn't represent a big commitment in terms of time or privacy.

Hi Adam,
What perfect timing! I was actually feeling a tiny bit overwhelmed (well, at least I'm not alone), and your post helped me put things in perspective and to remember to sort and sift, to go for quality over quantity alone. Thanks for the simple but very specific ways to do that sorting.
