I agree with much of what you recommend here. Brands should be carried through to the web. You give a lot of credibility to design - this is the direction the web is taking because looks really do count. And, much more can be said about design because it is so influential. Like walking into a beautiful room - it creates feeling and sets a tone. Your tip #4 doesn't always work for some of businesses. Let me explain. I have been repeatedly hired by businesses who stress they do not want to update their own site -ever. They want me to do the research and the updates for them. They just don't have time. On the other hand, I always offer CMS to anyone who is willing to use it. My recent blog at www.cyclonemarketing.info is titled, "Shopping It Out....Questions to ask Before Hiring a Web Design Company." Let me know what you think Adam.

I completely disagree with you on number 6. I've worked with some of the best designers in the industry (one who was recently hired by Yahoo!) and I think that designers and application develpers are two very seperate specializations. I'm a professional applications developer, and I focus on developing custom application code to meet business requirements, while a designer is responsible for layout, graphics, usability concerns and information architecture. The best possible end product exists when you bring in specialists for each seperate aspect of the application.

Nice tips Adam.

One thing I would add or amend is that if you are going to keep your design and marketing separate it still makes sense to hire a designer who understands the marketing process. Many don't and it's often common your marketing team will want to redo your site when the marketing begins.

It might also be a good idea to hire both designers and marketers early in the design process so they can work together toward the common goal.

"Setup your CMS" i dont believe this makes someone a good designer, but instead a reseller! although i guess this would depend on the CMS being one created by the web designer, or an open source system
