I couldn't agree more with the whole post, but especially with people labeling people with passion (usually in a negative way). Why does everyone think passionate people are weird or crazy? I sometimes have a hard time understanding how someone DOESN'T have any passion.

Well, this makes me feel a whole lot better about not signing up for Facebook and Myspace (yet - maybe eventually). The walled garden is a good analogy for what happens in those places. In your earlier post on this you mentioned aol and prodigy as walled gardens too ... I never liked aol for that very reason. It felt like something that stood between me and the Internet.
I think you really nail it here, in terms of why blogging is superior.

@laurent - exactly!
@Steven - glad to help - it's just funny to me how people put labels on those with passion. it's usually because they have none, and thus do not understand it. and you're right ;)

You make me even prouder to be a geek. Isn't it funny how the people who were often least popular in school because they not only didn't fit it, but didn't try to are the ones who end up going on to greater success?

Very interesting post and points...I'm in some social networks (including niches ones) and I'm not satisfied by the experience I've had so far. It's mostly about the content and the type of relationships that you can form there which I find 'shallow' and 'sporadic'. On the other hand, I follow 100s of blogs regularly with good content published by smart-knowledgeable people, I've learned a lot and I've built some good relationships with like-minded folks with whom I truly share a passion (one of your key word I believe ;-.
