No, Spamming People Still Doesn’t Work
Spam is an unfortunate inevitability of a communications platform as efficient and easy to use as the internet. It’s irresistible for some to send messages to hordes of people at once who don’t want to receive them; flood search engines with illegitimate results in the hopes of making a quick buck; and for lazy people to try and get instant results for something.
Why do people spam? Simple, it’s:
- Easy
- Cheap
- Fast
- Reaches many people simultaneously
But, what most don’t realize is even if spamming produces some positive results, the net effect is always negative.
Instead of spamming, you need to take the time to build permission with people who want to receive your messages, your products, your services, your music, whatever it is you’re trying to spread. Then you can interact with those who are actually interested in receiving your messages and not create the negative emotions against your brand that spam messages breed.
Why do savvy marketers never spam? Simple, because it can:
- Ruin your brand’s reputation forever
- Leave a bad taste in people’s mouth about your brand
- Destroy your trust with search engines
- Spark negativity about you in the blogosphere and social media
- Incur financial damages and potentially lawsuits
- Lead to negative returns
You have to get creative and be smart with the way you build permission with people on the web. But, when you find a way to make them come to you and opt-in to your messages and information, you can build relevant, anticipated communications with them that are far, far more effective than spamming will ever be.
The most successful marketers never spam, and if you hope to have sustainable and increasingly positive results and influence on the web, you will never spam either.

And the sad part is the majority of spammers out there don’t have enough time to read this blog post and learn something. Great points though…now if only we could reach them somehow.
