I agree with Dominic in a sense. While for some types of companies that offer services similar to many other services, cold calling can be a tough route.
I agree that in many cases, a business will search for what they need.
However, there might be services out there that an executive might not be aware of, and therefore doesn't have the knowledge to even know if it could be of benefit to him or his team.
In this case, I could see a professional services type company cold calling the executive. Additionally, the salesperson should make sure to do their homework and knows something about the executive and what they're working on.
I imagine a cold call from someone who knows nothing about your role or what you're working on would be frustrating.

Well you certainly gave me something to think about as I go out on my cold calling crusade!! Great tips!! I must say I hate to be cold called, yet today I find myself in that situation where I'm having to cold call to promote/introduce our company/services because it is a new business - tough job!! But I have learnt to be creative with my calls - thanks to the overly friendly calls I have had from past cold callers. My absolute pet hate is "good afternoon Lyn, how are you today" just writing this freaks me out!! Thanks Adam :-)

Great post! I just posted this on my blog. You really make so many great points that I try to get across to people all the time, but they're still living in the dark ages and don't want to listen. Thanks!
